The Photographic Studio, Harrow Campus, University of Westminster
Rock Townsend has created a new printing and design studio for the Photography Department at the University of Westminster's Harrow Campus. Collaborating closely with the department, our team crafted a design that meets the complex functional requirements of the space while incorporating aesthetics and lighting ideal for printing and editing.
At the heart of the studio is a large central table designed for teaching and collaboration. Above it, an overhead lightbox provides essential lighting for print analysis, ensuring an even distribution of light across the space. Curtains allow the area to be subdivided into smaller workspaces, offering flexible control over lighting levels, ideal for editing and reviewing photographs.
The studio’s palette is predominantly neutral, featuring ‘18% grey’—a mid-tone grey standard in photography used for exposure reference. This neutral tone enhances the clarity of visual work without distorting color perception. In contrast, a bold pop of yellow accentuates the soft seating area, offering a relaxed space for students to take breaks and unwind, creating a balanced atmosphere that is both functional and welcoming.
The design brief set out to create a professional environment that supports photo printing, editing, and collaborative learning. The aim was to design a vibrant, modern studio space that reflects the evolving needs of students and faculty alike, blending practical elements with a creative edge.
The result is an inspiring and high-quality studio space that students are proud to use and the university is eager to showcase. The project, which was initiated in May 2023, was completed in time for the September 2023 Autumn term, following a seamless development process between Rock Townsend and the university. This refurbishment exemplifies how a bold design approach can breathe new life into an existing space, transforming it into a dynamic learning environment.
