Kings Langley Secondary School, Love Lane, Kings Langley

Set within the open landscape of the Hertfordshire Green Belt, Kings Langley Secondary School is conceived as a carefully integrated educational environment that responds sensitively to both its rural setting and its expanding role within the community. The project forms one of seven schools delivered through the Interserve Kajima consortium as part of the Government’s PF2 programme.

The new school increases capacity from 1,085 to 1,180 pupils, accommodating students aged 11–18, and incorporates a dedicated SEN department that is fully integrated into the wider school environment. This inclusive approach underpins the spatial strategy, ensuring accessibility, clarity of movement, and a supportive learning setting for all users.

A strong emphasis is placed on the school’s commitment to both the arts and physical education. Purpose-designed theatre and gym facilities act as key anchors within the plan, each conceived with a high degree of flexibility. These spaces are capable of supporting a wide range of functions - from performances and sports activities to examinations, assemblies, and large-scale school events - maximising their utility throughout the academic year. Their role extends beyond the school day, with community use actively encouraged through a dedicated, secure entrance that allows controlled out-of-hours access without compromising safeguarding.

This outward-facing ethos is further reinforced by the placement of ICT classrooms at ground level, enabling easy public access for evening and weekend learning initiatives. The building therefore operates not only as a centre for education, but as a valuable local resource.

The construction of Kings Langley Secondary School was undertaken while the existing school remained fully operational. This required a carefully phased approach, balancing logistical constraints with the need to maintain a safe and effective teaching environment. The final design successfully negotiates these challenges, adhering to the established design principles of the programme while responding to the specific conditions of the site.

The resulting architecture is characterised by its clarity, efficiency, and generosity of space. Light-filled interiors, well-proportioned circulation routes, and strong visual connections contribute to a calm and legible environment for both staff and students. At the same time, the building establishes a meaningful relationship with its surroundings, offering a contemporary educational setting that is both inwardly supportive and outwardly engaged with the wider community.
