Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School, Hatfield

Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School is one of seven secondary schools that formed part of the Herts, Luton & Reading Priority School Building Programme, delivered in collaboration with the Interserve Kajima consortium. The project reimagines the school as a cohesive, state-of-the-art three-storey environment, purposefully designed to elevate the educational experience through sustainable design principles and seamlessly integrated advanced ICT.

At the heart of the design is a strong emphasis on community and connection. Generous social “heart” spaces and striking, light-filled atria form the building’s central spine—spaces that are as visually uplifting as they are functional, playing a key role in the natural ventilation strategy while fostering interaction and a shared sense of belonging.

Beyond its role as a place of learning, the school is envisioned as a vibrant community hub. It offers high-quality indoor and outdoor sports facilities, alongside an assembly hall and a fully equipped drama suite—all designed for dual use by both students and the wider community. Flexibility is embedded throughout, with adaptable multi-use spaces that can evolve alongside future educational needs. A dedicated secondary entrance and strategically zoned services ensure secure, independent access for community users outside school hours.

The facility also includes a dedicated Sixth Form centre and comprehensive SEND provision, reflecting an inclusive and forward-thinking educational ethos. Close collaboration with school staff has been integral throughout the design process, ensuring the building supports both academic outcomes and student wellbeing. Breakout spaces for informal learning, carefully modulated acoustics, and daylight-driven interiors combine to create a dynamic, supportive, and inspiring environment.

Ultimately, this project exemplifies our commitment to delivering thoughtful, future-ready educational architecture—spaces that not only nurture learning but also strengthen community ties and champion long-term sustainability.
