Bishop Ramsey, Ruislip

Rock Townsend was initially commissioned to conduct a masterplan study for a school operating across two sites. Collaborating closely with the school, the firm developed the initial concepts into a £22 million project funded by the TCF, resulting in a dynamic new ‘wedge’ building and a dedicated drama barn. The project also included refurbished facilities across the site, the removal of temporary accommodations, and the creation of improved access routes for staff, students, and the local community. Additional funding was secured through the sale of the redundant site.

The Headteacher envisioned a professional environment that would challenge traditional stereotypes, prepare students for the working world, and foster a more collegiate approach to learning, all of which were reflected in the building’s design. The compact form of the wedge was influenced by the site’s orientation and constraints, allowing the school to meet space requirements without sacrificing outdoor amenity areas. Additionally, the design of the new building emphasizes the celebration of faith, which is central to the school’s ethos.

Key elements like the dining piazza and central courtyard align with the school’s ambitions, enhancing the environment for students and staff. The redevelopment’s clear circulation routes facilitate interaction among occupants, promoting a sense of community and belonging. The arrangement of spaces around these routes creates both internal and external courtyards, supporting the school’s goal of fostering mentorship between sixth formers and younger students, aiding the transition from two separate schools into a unified community.

Headteacher Mr. Andrew Wilcock added a series of inspirational quotes throughout the circulation and communal spaces, stating, “The school’s personality is reflected in the architecture. Rock Townsend has understood our aspirations and provided us with a building that helps us achieve them.”

A detailed phasing plan was developed in collaboration with Rydon Construction and the school to manage complex access arrangements and minimize disruption during construction.

The building also incorporates numerous sustainable features, such as ground source heat pumps and an innovative natural ventilation system. This system utilizes the building’s form, with air heated by atrium glazing and distributed into classrooms, providing warm, fresh air during winter. These features encourage students to be mindful of their environmental responsibilities.

“Rock Townsend have understood our aspirations and given us a building that helps deliver them. The School’s personality is reflected in the architecture.”
