5 Lincoln’s Inn Fields is a Grade II Listed Georgian 4-storey property in the heart of Holborn. It was built in c1755, with the façade rebuilt in early 19th century using Flemish bond yellow bricks with rusticated stucco to the ground floor, and contains intricately detailed interiors with original fireplaces and wooden panelling.

Rock Townsend were appointed to refurbish and reconfigure the property on behalf of the London School of Economics to enhance and update it to provide a mixed use of new living accommodation and office use.

RT provided a multi-disciplinary team service including MEP and Fire Engineering together with specialist interior design by Studio Shelley in order to deliver the sensitive retrofit on a fast track programme to suit the client’s needs. The entire house including all furniture, fittings, accessories, appliances, cutlery, etc. were selected with the client in order to deliver a holistic and coordinated new home.

New study

The team worked closely with the client to deliver their particular requirements, as well as with Camden Planning and the Conservation officer to agree a retrofit strategy which would enhance the existing original features of the building whilst introducing a modified layout with contemporary finishes and specialist joinery.

The end result was a sympathetic approach within a modest budget to a building with layers of history, reviving the original characteristics of the building and providing a functional new home and office within Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
