Green School for Boys

Hounslow

Rock Townsend were commissioned by the LDBS to design a new build secondary school for boys in Isleworth for the Green School Trust, funded by Central Government Free School Capital works programme.  We worked on the scheme from Stage 0 to Stage 2+, including substantial brief development and feasibility plus development of the control option for this highly complex and constrained site.

Adjacent to the Historic Landscape of Syon Park and bounded by a Grade II listed wall and residential neighbours, the design needed to accommodate existing listed buildings, a World War II bunker and major services including the mains 3.5 diameter water supply pipe to central London, all on a very small site.  Located under the Heathrow flight path, the building also needed to be fully sealed and mechanically ventilated.

The resulting scheme required an innovative multi-storey building to enable the accommodation to fit on the site.  Using our expertise in school design and working closely alongside the school team we were able to model pupil movement through the school to design circulation and staircases to suit, while maintaining value for money.

The scheme was subsequently taken on by HNW Architects and successfully delivered in 2020. During this time the brief changed by reducing pupil numbers requiring some redesign and enabling the Contractor Architects to avoid many of the contextual challenges.
