Sustainability Hub

University of Plymouth

RT were commissioned to develop proposals to convert an existing building into a central hub for sustainability based research and collaboration. Plymouth required a flexible space, conducive to cross collaboration whilst being a beacon for sustainable energy conservation and production.

We loved the idea of strapping sustainable initiatives on to an existing building. Knocking the building down and building new is likely to increase the carbon footprint of the site, whereas adjusting the site to suit the user’s requirements and utilizing the embodied energy makes for a more effective sustainable approach
— Tim Robinson, Project Architect

The project was completed in 2019 and has created a highly-sustainable and collaborative new space for sustainability research, education and partnership working.

The refurbished building incorporates energy efficient LED lighting and maximises natural light wherever possible; 4 kilowatt photovoltaics and a digital energy display at Reception. Insulation is improved through FSC certified sustainable timber cladding, and all materials were responsibly sourced, with a focus on reuse. The building also features an internal green wall with
over 90 plants per sqm. The project is gold SKA targeted (currently being assessed)
