Little Heath, Fairlop
The City of London Corporation sought a 100 acre site to consolidate and secure the future wholesale food market operations of Billingsgate, Smithfield and Spitalfiled. Following a strategic review The Corporation invited local authorities to put forward suitable sites for consideration.
LB. Redbridge approach RT to develop a concept design for their site at Little Heath near Fairlop. The proposed vision for the site was for the low-grade farmland to be reinvented as a sustainable Wholesale Food Market that, combined with a new Food Tech Science Park and Food Academy, would become a hub for all things food related set within a new enhanced green parkland that would reconnected with the neighbouring leisure facilities of Fairlop Waters and Hainault Country Park.
The wider benefits to the borough would be the creation of 3,500 local jobs, 200 SME’s and businesses alongside an on-site training academy. The predicted combined turnover of c.£800m would significantly improve and secure Redbridge’s future economic prosperity.
